Flowers for an exemplary woman: Salomé Ureña

The LiLeón Foundation participated in the floral tribute as part of the National Poet’s Day.

On October 21, 2024, the International Poetry Week Festival in its 21st edition held its traditional visit to the National Pantheon to pay tribute to the poet and educator, Salomé Ureña, on the occasion of the 174th anniversary of her birth.

As every year, different figures and intellectuals gathered for a solemn floral tribute to Salomé Ureña. This year, the event was led by Mateo Morrison, president of the Espacios Culturales Foundation, and a representative of the festival’s organizing committee, along with Lidia León, president of the LiLeón Foundation. The attendees included international guest poets, members of the organizing committee, and individuals interested in honoring the legacy of this distinguished Dominican poet.

National Poet’s Day was established on the same date as Ureña’s birthday, highlighting her importance and remarkable poetic career in 19th-century Dominican literature, as well as her invaluable contribution to Dominican women: the right to education. As the founder of the Instituto de Señoritas, under the guidance of Eugenio María de Hostos, she opened the doors for Dominican women to access education, enabling them to advance beyond their daily responsibilities.
